The RPG Character Library: Swords & Magick

I had made games before (all, sadly, lost to time), but my first real attempt at making an RPG was Swords & Magick (Yes, with a "K."  Such an edgelord.), which I started cobbling together after playing in a fantasy RPG based on the Fighting Fantasy novels.  The game had a little bit of everything from all of the games I was playing at the moment:  The skill system of Basic Fantasy, the exploding d6 damage from Warhammer Fantasy, and, of course, D&D.  There was also quite a bit of Geoff-patented wonkiness thrown in there to leave an indelible thumbprint.

I had a lot of fun playing this game.  I ran several campaigns with it, including one in college and several after it.  Then I got distracted by other things and other ideas and moved on to different games (such as Dungeon ADVENTURE!, which I'm sure I'm going to get to at some point).

I remade Navino the Blue as a Swords & Magick sorcerer.  On the plus side, he gets way more spells than he does as a first level OD&D character.  On the bad side, I didn't give him nearly enough money to buy any equipment (1d10 x 5 silver sovereigns makes for a very small purse, Geoff, especially when you have to buy each location of armor individually).

There's a lot of fiddly pedantic stuff that I would phase out of the system were I creating it today. Those things include Structure (hit points for your gear), all the unnecessary skills, hit locations for armor, and other superfluous things.

I did like the Resistance stat, which is your base percentile chance to avoid magic (double for priests, as they're magic sinks), that any weapon could be devastating if you rolled well enough, and having a basic combat stat so that fighters weren't just hulking piles of Strength.  Also, yes there's a skill that makes a rain of radishes; yes the radishes are permanent until eaten; no the radishes don't do any damage when they hit you. Best medieval peasant spell ever!
